Password protection
Ask for a password before anyone can open your project. Works with Unlisted and Public projects.
What is password protection?
Visitors have to type a password before the project loads. It works on top of the visibility setting.
- Works with Unlisted and Public projects. A Private project doesn't open for anyone anyway
- Visitors see a password screen before anything loads
- You decide who gets the password
- You can add it or remove it at any time
When to use it
Client presentations
Share work with specific clients, and keep it closed if the link travels further.
Confidential content
Price lists, internal documents or content for members only.
Access for an event
Give the password to the people at an event or in a group.
Setting up password protection
- Open your project in the editor
- Go to the Share tab
- Make sure the project is Unlisted or Public, and saved
- Open the Password Protection section
- Type a password of at least 8 characters
- Press Enable. The password applies right away, there is nothing else to save
Only the workspace owner and admins can add, change or remove a password.
How it works for visitors
When someone opens a protected project:
- They see a password screen instead of the project
- Once they type the right password, the project loads
- Their browser remembers it for one hour, then asks again
- After too many wrong tries, the form locks for a while
Good to know
- A protected project is never indexed by search engines, even when it is Public
- Link previews in chats and social posts say "Protected project" instead of showing the title, description and cover
- The password protects the project page. The files you uploaded are still stored at public addresses, so don't rely on it for truly secret material
- Changing the password locks out new visitors right away. Someone who already unlocked the project keeps access until their hour runs out
- Inside an embed on another website, the password may not unlock the project, because browsers often block the cookie that remembers it in frames from other sites. For a protected project, share the link instead
A Studio piece has its own password, separate from the project's.
Best practices
Use a strong password
Avoid easy ones like "1234" or "password". Mix letters and numbers.
Send it separately
Send the password through a different channel than the link, for example the link by email and the password by message.
Change it when needed
If the password was shared too widely, set a new one.
Visibility and password
The password works on top of visibility. An Unlisted project with a password needs both the link and the password.
Removing password protection
To stop asking for the password:
- Open the Share tab of your project
- In Password Protection, press Remove Password and confirm
- From then on, the project opens without a password
